English language requirements
Do I need to take an English language test?
All applicants must document English language proficiency. The documentation requirements depend on the country in which you have completed your education and are different for our bachelor’s level courses and our master’s level courses. You may find the requirements on this page.
If you are applying for bachelor’s level course, please check the GSU-list that you can find on the webpage.

Does the International Summer School accept alternative English tests, such as the Duolingo English Test?
No, the ISS accepts only the following English tests: IELTS, TOEFL, the University of Cambridge exams or Pearson. However, some applicants may be exempt from documenting their English proficiency with these tests. You can find more information here.
Can I submit my application first and submit official English test results at a later date if I will be taking an approved test soon?
Yes, you may submit your application before uploading official English test documentation. However, the English test results must be uploaded no later than the final deadline, 1st of February for scholarship applicants and 1st of March for self-financed applicants.?
Do you accept expired English language test results?
No, your English language test needs to be valid until at least1st of March 2026.

Application process
I will graduate from secondary school/high school this summer, can I apply for a bachelor’s course with a provisional certificate?
No, we do not accept provisional certificates. Applicants need to have graduated from secondary school/high school at the time of application. This is because we cannot be certain that applicants will successfully complete secondary school/high school before attending ISS.
I will complete my bachelor’s degree in the spring, can I apply for a master’s course with a provisional certificate?
No, we do not accept provisional certificates. Applicants need to have completed their Bachelor’s degree at the time of application. This is because we cannot be certain that applicants will successfully complete their degree before attending ISS.
Do I need to write a separate statement of purpose for each selected course??
No, one statement of purpose is sufficient for your whole application. You may include a paragraph or a couple of sentences where you explain why you are interested in each of the courses.?

Scholarships
Can I apply as a scholarship applicant and as a self-financed applicant??
No, you must apply either as a self-financed applicant or as a scholarship applicant. If you apply for both, your scholarship application will be rejected.
What are the criteria for receiving a scholarship?
Due to the limited number of scholarships available, not all eligible applicants will receive an award. Selections are based on various factors, including each applicant’s unique circumstances. You can find the scholarship criteria on this scholarship information page.
Can I apply for a scholarship as a bachelor's student??
No, only applicants who are applying for a master’s level course may apply for a scholarship. We do not offer scholarships to students taking a bachelor's course or a Norwegian language course (NORA-course on level 1,2 or 3).
I have dual citizenship (EU and non-EU) – am I qualified for a scholarship?
Applicants who are citizens of EU/EEA/Switzerland but reside outside of EU/EEA/Switzerland may be eligible under exceptional circumstances. If you are unsure whether you fall under these specifications, please e-mail iss@admin.uio.no.
