Bachelor's degree
You must have a bachelor’s degree comparable to a Norwegian bachelor’s degree.
Required specialisation and minimum grade requirement
You must have a specialisation of at least 80 ECTS credits required by the programme and a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C. A Norwegian C is described as a good grade, generally comparable to an American B and a Second Class Upper in the British system. We do not use conversion tables for foreign grades. All foreign education is individually evaluated during the admission process.

The required specialisation consists of 85 ECTS where the following, or equivalent, courses are included:
- 60 ECTS credits at bachelor's level, which includes the subject areas mechanics, electromagnetism, oscillations and waves, quantum physics, experimental physics, and thermodynamics and statistical physics.
At the University of Oslo, this corresponds to the following courses:- Either?FYS1100 – Mechanics and Modelling (Norwegian only), FYS1105 – Classical Mechanics or?FYS-MEK1110 – Mechanics
- FYS1120 – Electromagnetism
- One of the following combinations:
- FYS2130 – Oscillations and Waves and?FYS2140 – Quantum Physics
- FYS2130 – Oscillations and Waves and?FYS3110 – Quantum Mechanics
- FYS2140 – Quantum Physics and?FYS3400 – Condensed Matter Physics
- FYS2140 – Quantum Physics and?FYS3580 – Introduction to Nuclear Reactor Physics
- FYS3110 – Quantum Mechanics and?FYS3400 – Condensed Matter Physics
- FYS3110 – Quantum Mechanics and?FYS3580 – Introduction to Nuclear Reactor Physics
- Either?FYS2150 – Experimental physics, AST2210 – Observational Astronomy or FYS-KJM3506 - Nuclear methods and instrumentation

- At least 20 ECTS credits natural sciences at advanced bachelor's level
- At least 5 ECTS credits programming with/in languages such as C/C++/Java/Python/Matlab
When calculating the grade point average for the required specialisation, only 60 credits in physics and 20 credits in natural sciences are counted.
For this programme option it is recommended that you have passed some of the following, or similar courses from other universities: FYS3110 – Quantum mechanics?and FYS3400 Condensed matter physics.
