Procedures for applications for external funding at IFIKK

The procedures are intended to ensure that all applications for external funding at the Department of Philosophy, Classics, History of Art and Ideas (IFIKK) are academically and administratively quality-assured, and approved by the department management prior to submission.

Procedure for permanent academic staff, including researchers

1. Information about planned applications

When a permanent academic staff member plans to submit an application for external funding or to participate in a project at another unit/institution, the Head of Research and the Research Administration must be informed as early as possible.?

Notification to the Head of Research and the Research Administration must include:

  • name of the call and funding source
  • application deadline
  • any collaboration partners?

The Head of Research and the Research Administration provide support for proposal writing and keep the relevant Head of Section informed.?

2. Submission of draft application and budget?

Well in advance of the application deadline, the applicant must submit a draft of the application and a preliminary budget to the Head of Research and the Research Administration.?
The purpose is to ensure that the budget is realistic and in accordance with UiO guidelines, and that resource needs, co-funding, and administrative support are clarified.

3. Approval by department management?

All applications must be approved by the department management prior to submission. After the applicant has submitted the draft and preliminary budget to the Head of Research, the application is assessed by the department’s management group.?

The purpose is to ensure that the department has sufficient resources to submit the application.?

? Indicative rates for buyout (teaching relief) related to externally funded projects ?

  • Researcher Project for Early Career Scientists (FRIPRO): 25%
  • Researcher Project for Experienced Researchers (FRIPRO): 25%
  • ERC Starting Grant (PI): 50%
  • ERC Consolidator Grant (PI): 40%
  • ERC Advanced Grant (PI): 30%
  • ERC Synergy Grant (PI): 30%
  • Participation in a project: 10–20%
  • Participation as PI in a large project or centre: 20–40%
  • Upper limit for total buyout: 50%?

All rates are indicative and may be adjusted to meet the needs of the project and the department.

Procedure for temporary academic staff and external applicants

1. Contact when requesting IFIKK as host?

When a temporary academic staff member or an external applicant wishes to apply for external funding with IFIKK as the host institution, a request must be submitted to the Head of Research.The request must include:

  • name of the call and funding source
  • a brief description of the project idea
  • application deadline
  • any collaboration partners

The Head of Research informs the relevant Head of Section and the Research Administration about the request.?

2. Approval of host status?

All requests to use IFIKK as host for externally funded projects must be approved by the department management and the relevant Head of Section. In the assessment, emphasis is placed on whether the project aligns with the department’s research interests and strategy.?
If necessary, the department may obtain references.?

3. Submission of draft application and budget?

Well in advance of the application deadline, the applicant must submit a draft of the application and a preliminary budget to the Head of Research, with the Research Administration copied.??
The purpose is to ensure that the project and budget are realistic and in accordance with UiO guidelines, and that resource needs, co-funding, and administrative support are clarified.?

4. Approval by department management?

All applications must be approved by the department management prior to submission. After the draft application and preliminary budget have been submitted to the Head of Research, the application is discussed at a meeting of the management group.?
The purpose is to ensure that the department has sufficient resources to submit the application.
