Hello IN3020/4020 students,
We are towards the end of the course, and I hope you have learned some interesting material over this time. It is now the time to think about the exam, which is in the beginning of June.
As you may remember, the exam procedure will be briefly the following:
- sit-in exam at the examination schools using Inspera,
- 4 hours for 10-15 questions, which sum up to 100 points,
- lecture slides are available to you in Inspera as one big pdf file, and no more materials are allowed to use,
- the exact thresholds for marks (i.e., what is enough for A, B, C, etc.) will be decided during marking; without any promises and only for your reference, last year thresholds were: A: 75; B: 63; C: 50; D: 37; E: 25; F: 0 (notice here that it was not needed to solve everything to get A).

Two of our group sessions are on Mondays, which means that we have to miss two weeks for them. This is in disagreement with the lectures and with the third group. To manage this discrepancy, we will have Weekly Exercise sheet 10 for self study for the Monday groups' attenders. I also publish the solutions for your convenience right now. If you have anything to discuss about this sheet, all usual communication channels are available: Discourse, private chats with me after lectures, email, etc. All students are also welcome to attend the Friday group session on 14 April, which will be dedicated to this exercise sheet.

The second mandatory is published. The deadline is March 21. Please, keep in mind that this mandatory is more difficult that the first one (especially, Question 3, which may be a little harder than any questions on the exam), so it may take you more time to solve it. We will have one more Mandatory in the end of April (the exact date will be known later).

I apologise for the sound quality in the last two recordings. I do not yet fully understand the exact cause of this problem, but I will do my best to avoid (or at least minimise) this in the future. I remind, however, that we have fully physical teaching, and the recordings are just a supplementary service that I provide by my own initiative and as is.

I hope all of you have ideas how to use it, but feel free to send me an email and I send you a brief tutorial (let me also know if you have any specific difficulties with using the tool).
I do not think we need much from it; let's start with one category, Questions&Discussions, where you can rise your issue and I will answer as soon as possible (you are very welcome to ask for a following clarification if my answer is not clear). Remember that you can post your questions anonymously if you wish.
Note, however, that this is just a communication tool, and the main source of information for the course is its web page (i.e., here).

We are finally done with the intro/backup and will start with the first essential part of our course this week: Relational Algebra. We will spend 2 weeks of lectures on this, and this will be the topic of the first mandatory exercise. The deadline for submission in Devilry is 28 Feb (midnight); this will allow you to cover this material in group sessions and have some time after this to do the exercises themselves. The exercise sheet is available now (see on the left).
Note that we will have further mandatories more frequently.

Hello everyone,
Remember that there is no physical lecture today. Instead, we have a pre-recorded video, which is now published. It is a bit longer than one lecture is supposed to be. It is not ideal, but I believe that it is better to finish the SQL summary in one piece (we will compensate this time later with a shorter lecture). Remember also that it is a `crash course' on SQL, so it is a bit denser than usual lectures. There are also a couple of small glitches in the video (no more than 1 min in total), hopefully they will not disturb you too much. We will start with discussions about this lecture material next time. See you on Wednesday!

I regret to admit that we have lost the recording of the first lecture due to a software fail. For those who relied on recording: all the important information (mostly, organisational) is included in the lecture slides. Let me know (e.g., by email) if something is unclear.

Hello IN3020/4020-takers!
Welcome everyone who wants to know how database engines work inside. We will launch on Wednesday, 25 January, at 14:15 in Lille auditorium of Kristen Nygaards hus (this is not the main IFI building, but the one you can go from it across the roofed bridge).
We will normally have two lectures and one group session each week. Do not forget to sign up to group sessions at some point towards the beginning of the course.
Your main entry point for the course will be this page, as well as the Schedule sub-page, where we will publish the materials related to each particular lecture/group session (we will also use other communication tools, which I will introduce in the first lecture).
