GEO4011 ¨C Field Course in Basin Analysis

Course content

In this course, you will be introduced to foreland basin infill dynamics. Introductory lectures and seminars are held prior to the field trip. Participants will work in groups to solve structural, sedimentological, and biostratigraphic problems that can be related to basin history.

Learning outcome

After completing this course, students;

• Have advanced knowledge of structural geology, sedimentology, and biostratigraphy.
• Can collect and analyse their own dataset in preparation for oral and written presentations.

Admission to the course

The course is restricted to students admitted to the master programme in Geosciences at the University of Oslo.

The course has a total of 16 places. Applicants are being ranked after the following two categories:

1. Master students in Geosciences admitted to one of the following programme options:

   - Structural Geology and Tectonics

   - or: Petroleum Geoscience

   - or: Sedimentology, Paleontology and Stratigraphy

   - or: Geology (no longer admits students)

   - or: Petroleum geology and Petroleum geophysics (no longer admits students)

2. Master students in Geosciences in one of the other programme options at the master programme in Geosciences.

Applicants will be ranked by the number of ECTS-credits within each category; all applicants within category 1 is ranked before applicants in category 2. If there are space limitations in the course, available places will be awarded to students selected randomly among those with the same amount of ECTS credits.

Formal prerequisite knowledge

Either:

• GEO4850 ¨C Basin Tectonics and Structures or?GEO4218 ¨C Basin Formation and Development (discontinued) or GEO4216 ¨C Sedimentologi og sekvensstratigrafi

or:

• GEO4230 ¨C Basin formation and sequence stratigraphy (discontinued) and GEO4220 ¨C Depositional environments and biostratigraphy (discontinued) or equal knowledge

These requirements are absolute and can not be waived for students with 120 ECTS or more, ref: "The examination rules for the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Point 2.1 Required prerequisite knowledge."

The course includes a compulsory field course and excursions. A health and safety course for safety in the field must be passed before you can go on these.

• 5 credits overlap with GEO4010 ¨C Introduction to a master study in geosciences (discontinued).
• 5 credits overlap with GEO4013 ¨C Field excursion in Physical Geography and Hydrology (discontinued).
• 5 credits overlap with GEO4014 ¨C Basin Analysis Seminar and Field Course.

Teaching

Teaching will consist of lectures, seminars, and student presentations integrated with a field course. Active participation in the field course is required. Student presentations during the field course, and handing in field notes and a brief summary report after the field course counts towards the final pass/fail grade.

The field course is compulsory and consists of 7-10-days in Spain. For the field course, the student must have a valid VISA and passport, allowing for a round trip to Spain. It is the student?s own responsibility to make sure that this is the case, well in advance of the departure.

Attendance at the first lecture is compulsory. Students who fail to meet, are considered to have withdrawn from the course unless they have previously given notice to the Student administration (studieinfo@geo.uio.no).

We reserve the right to change the teaching?form and examination of the course in semesters where 5 or fewer students have been admitted.

Examination

• Full attendance on the field course is required and approved.
• The examination consists of student presentations during the field course and handing in field notes and a brief summary report after the field course.
• All examinations parts must be passed and count together in the pass/fail grade.

It is possible to take the exam up to 3 times. If you?withdraw from the exam?after the deadline or during the exam, this will be counted as an examination attempt.

It will also be counted as one of the three attempts to sit the exam for this course if you sit the exam for one of the following courses:

• GEO4010 ¨C Introduction to a master study in geosciences (discontinued)
• GEO4013 ¨C Field excursion in Physical Geography and Hydrology (discontinued)

Examination support material

No examination support material is allowed.

Language of examination

In this course any written exam questions or assignment questions may be available in English only.

Grading scale

Grades are awarded on a pass/fail scale. Read more about the grading system.

Resit an examination

Students who can document a valid reason for absence from the regular examination are offered a postponed examination at the beginning of the next semester.

Re-scheduled examinations are not offered to students who withdraw during, or did not pass the original examination.
