ISSHF2020 – Gender Equality in the Nordic Countries

Course content

The course gives an introduction to the Nordic context and an overview of how the concept and implementation of gender equality has developed and is currently practiced in the Nordic countries. The main focus is on the period after the 1970s, and themes that are taught relate gender equality to:?

  • Gender equality as a concept

  • The women's movement and state feminism

  • Work-life balance and gender equality ideals

  • Access to work and politics?

  • Nordic gender equality in an intersectional perspective?

  • Men and masculinities: change and continuity

  • Gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights

  • Gender-based violence?

  • Gender, climate, and indeginous rights

Moreover, dilemmas and paradoxes concerning gender equality in the Nordic countries will be a central theme, as well as the attempt to answer questions as: How can we understand changing gender norms in the Nordic countries, and to what extent is it possible to identify a Nordic model of gender equality?

Learning outcome

Knowledge

You shall acquire:

  • basic knowledge of the Nordic context

  • knowledge of concepts used in analyzing gender equality issues

  • knowledge of different conceptions of gender equality

  • knowledge of challenges and outcomes of gender equality in specific fields

Skills

You will be able to:

  • analyze gender equality issues and to place them in societal and cultural contexts

  • discuss historical processes of gender equality measures in the Nordic region

  • discuss the status of gender equality in fields such as everyday life, working life and politics

  • work in an independent, thorough and critical manner with central issues in research literature

  • understand the need to follow ethical norms in academic work

Competences

After completing the course you have:

  • acquired insight into gender equality issues and processes in general, which can be used to analyze specific gender equality concerns

  • the ability to see, analyze and problematize gender equality in texts, practices and policies

Overlapping courses

Teaching

The course consists of 3 hours of daily instruction, Monday to Friday, for four weeks. Classroom sessions include lectures and group discussions, often based on comparative analysis. Field trips to institutions in Oslo are included in the course fee. Please note that travel time for excursions may be included in the lecture hours.

Daily attendance is expected of all participants. Students must attend a minimum of 75% of the lectures in order to take the final exam.

Examination

The course is graded on the basis of a term paper.??In order to submit the term paper, students must meet the following criteria:?

  • A mandatory written exercise, in the form of a draft of the term paper (pass/fail)

  • A mandatory oral presentation (pass/fail)

  • The mandatory participation requirement (75%)

The term paper must have a length of 2500 words (+/- 10%), references, front page and list of references is not included in the word count.

Language of examination

The term paper can be written in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish or English.

Grading scale

The term paper is graded from A - F, where the best grade is A, and F is a fail.. Read more about the grading system.?
