      <h2>What will you learn with us?</h2><p>You will gain insight into how the structure of materials affects their properties. The main topics are:</p><ul><li>Energy – fuel cells, batteries, solar cells, and energy conversion</li><li>Functional materials – sensors and electronics</li><li>Nanoscience – size-dependent properties, e.g., catalysis</li></ul><p>Through a combination of theory and practical projects, you will learn how to develop new materials and how to analyze and utilize them. The program provides you with a solid foundation to work in both academia and industry, whether in research, product development, or innovation.</p><figure class="image-captioned"><p><img src="/studier/program/materialvitenskap-master/hvorfor-velge/image.png" alt="Student som jobber i laboratorie" width="690" height="514" loading="lazy"/></p><figcaption>Photo: Jarli and Jordan</figcaption></figure><h2>How the study works</h2><p><br/>During the master's program, you will learn to plan and conduct research through an extensive master's thesis. At the same time, you will expand your theoretical background by taking courses at a high academic level. Along the way, you will learn to think critically and to communicate research results in a clear and effective manner. You will become part of an environment in an active research group that participates in both national and international projects. These research groups offer projects to program students:</p><ul><li><a href="https://www.mn.uio.no/kjemi/english/research/groups/nafuma/">NAFUMA?Nanostructures and Functional Materials</a></li><li><a href="https://www.mn.uio.no/kjemi/english/research/groups/catalysis/">Catalysis</a></li><li><a href="https://www.mn.uio.no/kjemi/english/research/groups/electrochemistry/">Electrochemistry</a></li><li><a href="https://www.mn.uio.no/fysikk/english/research/groups/solid-state-physics-quantum-technology/">Solid-state Physics and Quantum Technology</a></li></ul><p>Collaboration with industry and research institutions gives you the opportunity to work on real-world issues and gain valuable expertise.</p><h2>Study environment and student life</h2><p><br/>The program features an engaging and inclusive student environment that promotes a good learning atmosphere and creates an inspiring everyday life. The student organization <a href="https://foreninger.uio.no/menageriet/">Menageriet</a> organizes both social and academic activities, such as game and movie nights, exam workshops, and popular science lectures. Additionally, you have the opportunity to influence the study offerings through the Chemical and Physical Academic Committee, which also organizes regular lectures.</p><p>You will find both social and academic activities at the group, department, and university levels. UiO has around 450 <a href="https://www.sio.no/en/associations">student associations</a>, so there is guaranteed to be something that suits you!</p><h2>Studies abroad</h2><p><br/>As a student at the University of Oslo, you have many opportunities to complete parts of your studies at a foreign university. You can travel abroad through organized exchange programs.</p><p><a href="https://www.mn.uio.no/studier/utland/">Exchange opportunities</a></p><p><br/>In addition, exchange may be possible in some cases through individual agreements between the student, supervisor, and researchers at foreign institutions. This means there is a high degree of flexibility regarding the timing of your study and the duration of a stay abroad.</p><h2>Job opportunities and further studies</h2><p><br/>The master's program provides you with many career opportunities. You can conduct research, develop, and provide consultancy in the private sector, at research institutes, or in academia. Read more about your options. Previous master's students from our program have worked as:</p><ul><li>Senior advisor at the Norwegian Environment Agency</li><li>Senior researcher at SINTEF and IFE</li><li>AI advisor at Equinor</li><li>Consultant at Geelmuyden-Kiise and McKinsey</li><li>Product developer at Morrow and Jotun</li><li>Member of the Parliament</li></ul><p>The program also qualifies you for further <a href="https://www.mn.uio.no/english/research/phd/">Ph.D</a>. studies in materials science, physics, or chemistry. If you pursue an additional <a href="/studier/program/ppu/">one-year practical-pedagogical education</a> (PPU), you can become a lecturer and teach in schools or higher education.
