About remote access
When you have equipment set up on Lab IT, you may need to log in from outside, for example to start or stop jobs or update software.
There are two different ways you can log in to equipment on Lab IT from outside:
- Logging in via the lab portal (recommended method)
- Gives you a remote desktop connection to the machine
- Available to UiO users and external users (GREG users and WebID users)
- Logging in via lab-login.uio.no (for users who only need ssh and are familiar with it)
- Gives you an ssh window to the machine
- Available to UiO users
Option 1: Logging in with the lab portal (recommended method)
Get access to the lab portal
Find your Lab-IT contact and ask to be granted access to your equipment. Include your UiO username when you get in touch.
To grant access to external users, see Access for external researchers or vendors.
Log in to the lab portal
- Go to the lab portal
Log in to the lab portal
- For UiO users: Enter your username and password in the top of the login dialog.
- For WebID users: Select Logg inn med WebID further down in the login dialog.

Approve two-factor authentication
- Approve the login using two-factor authentication.

After logging in
- Once you have entered your username and password and approved the login with two-factor authentication, you are logged in to the lab portal and can start using it.
- If you only have access to one piece of equipment, you will be taken directly to it. If you have access to several, you must choose which one to access after logging in.

Option 2: Logging in with ssh
Get access for ssh login
Contact IT support so they can grant you access. Include your UiO username.
Log in with ssh via lab-login:
- Open a terminal window and log in to login.uio.no
- Then log in to lab-login.uio.no
- From there, you can reach your equipment using ssh
It is not possible to do port or proxy forwarding via lab-login.
